abstract

background: garlic is a valuable medicinal plant with variability in desirable morphological and physiological characteristics. the analysis of genetic diversity plays an important role in breeding programs. the rapd technique could be very effective in detecting genetic variation in garlic.  objective: the objective of the present work was to detect molecular polymorphism among iranian garlic ecotypes by rapd technique.   methods: random amplified polymorphic dna (rapd) marker utilized to assess the genetic diversity among twenty-two different ecotypes of the iranian garlic. genomic dna was extracted from young leaves using dellaporta method. rapd amplification was performed using ten 10-mers arbitrary primers.   results: results indicated that five out of ten pair primers had no amplification. a total of 35 rapd bands were produced, 31 of which (88.5%) were polymorphic. the similarity matrices and dendrogram were obtained using upgma algorithms. conclusion: in conclusion the entire population was grouped into four clusters with 3, 9, 1 and 9 ecotypes. no significant relationship between genetic diversity detected by rapd technique and geographical origins.

Garlic (Allium sativum)

Overview Garlic’s current principal medicinal uses are to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, as an antimicrobial, and as a preventive agent for cancer. The active constituents are several complex sulfur-containing compounds that are rapidly absorbed, transformed and metabolized. Pooled data from numerous randomized trials suggest that garlic low...

Allelopathic Effect of Decomposed Garlic (allium Sativum L.) Stalk on Lettuce (l. Sativa Var. Crispa L.)

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) stalk is a byproduct and normally the waste of garlic production but now is thought a good biological resource. It is necessary to utilize this resource efficiently and reasonably to reduce environment pollution and achieve agricultural sustainable development. The allelopathy of decomposed garlic stalk at different ratios (0:100, 1:100, 3:100 and 5:100) was investiga...

Optimization of Extraction of Cycloalliin from Garlic (Allium sativum L.) by Using Principal Components Analysis

In this study, we report the optimal extraction conditions for obtaining organosulfur compounds, such as cycloalliin, from garlic by using principal component analysis (PCA). Extraction variables including temperature (40~80°C), time (0.5~12 h), and pH (4~12) were investigated for the highest cycloalliin yields. The cycloalliin yield (5.5 mmol/mL) at pH 10 was enhanced by ~40% relative to those...
